Fit Family for a Fun Vacation

I have to say that one of my most difficult jobs as a mom is getting my family, particularly my kids, to eat right and exercise plenty. Kids often seem resistant to anything that’s considered to be good for them, but this natural tendency can be overcome. The trick is making these habits into a routine. Unfortunately, I realized long ago that a simple vacation could smash that routine to pieces if I wasn’t careful. That didn’t stop me from trying, though, and the effort has left me with some handy tips for keeping ourselves healthy while we’re traveling. Now, I’d like to pass them on to you.

Buffet Survival

Whenever you go on vacation, you’re sure to encounter more than a few buffets. Their rich delicacies are sometimes available at all hours, and it’s often an all-you-can-eat affair. Unsurprisingly, it’s easy to go overboard if you don’t exercise caution. The key to surviving a buffet is to moderate yourself. Don’t heap your plate too high, choose plenty of veggies and allow yourself only one trip through.

Seek Local Opportunities

In the wake of the current healthy eating trend, numerous local-food restaurants have made an appearance on the dining scene. They operate on the premise that the less time fresh food spends in transit, the more nutritious and flavorful it will be. Such restaurants place a strong emphasis on offering healthy menu options, many of which are low in fat and calories while being high in flavor and nutrients.

Bathe Your Insides

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is essential to keeping your metabolism and other body functions running smoothly. Spending a lot of time in the sunshine, especially on a hot or windy day, can quickly sap your water stores, so be sure you always keep water on hand in your hotel, car and backpack.

Active Accommodations

More and more people are seeking accommodations that facilitate their healthy lifestyle habits, and hotels are answering the call. Many hotels are going to great lengths to provide workout facilities to their guests, often in the form of jogging tracks, fully stocked gyms, and even the ability to rent a bike. I recently booked a great hotel with a great gym for our upcoming trip to Orlando. With so many hotels in Orlando, this process proved to be quite overwhelming. However, sites like Gogobot can make the process a bit easier. Some also offer access to local gyms through special partnerships.

Fitness and healthy eating are important lifestyle choices, no matter where you are. By sticking with routines similar to those you practice while you’re at home, you and your family can enjoy better health and a more enjoyable trip.
